Watercoloring with a Stencil

Good morning friends and welcome back! I hope all is well in your neck of the woods. I’ve been at home and practicing social distancing for 1 month now. I have good days and days where the anxiety of the situation starts to creep in. I’m sure that describes every one of us right now. On the not so good days, I need a good project to focus on. And today’s card was just that!

I’ve been dying to ink up this Petals Stencil but really wanted to do so in a unique way. So, watercolour it was! This was actually quite easy to do and didn’t take too long, either. However, I’m guessing a more detailed stencil would be a bit difficult.

I started by blending some Worn Lipstick Distress Ink onto a piece of Mixed Media paper. You’ll want to use a water soluble ink for this and preferably in a shade close to what colours you’ll be painting with. I knew I wanted the petals to be pink, that’s why I chose that ink.

I chose a couple Zig Clean Colour Real Brush Pens for this. I chose these mostly for the control they give. Starting in the centre of the pattern, I started by applying a yellow shade and blended out. The yellow was bright enough to cover over the pink.

As I worked my way out, I added both yellow and pink to the petals and around the outer edge, I blended just the ink from the blending. You could use a water brush for this technique but I blended everything with a paintbrush and water.

I love the different shades and the hard edges of this! I was really torn on what to do for a sentiment. I didn’t want to cover too much of the pattern. I took the smallest die from the Reverse Scallop Circle Dies and cut the most yellow portion of the pattern. I took the same die and cut it from white cardstock.

Using Scotch Tape, I adhered the white, outer scalloped portion to the inner, yellow portion of the other die cuts. I used liquid glue to adhere the stencilled panel onto a white card base. I used foam adhesive to adhere the scalloped circle back into its place.

The Reverse Scallop Circle Dies comes with a small heart. I die cut that from white cardstock and stamped a small sentiment which comes from the Pretty Jars Set. I foam mounted the heart as well.

I played around with some Glossy Dots and sequins but in the end, left it plain. However, I think a good spritz of some shimmer spray before adhering the sentiment would have look awesome!

I thank you for stopping by today! Stay safe, be well and hang in there!

Until next time…

Laurie
