Savannah Learns to Color #39: Colored Pencils

**I’ve written this BEFORE the hurricane hits, but I’m praying Milton fizzles out or turns around!!! Please pray for our friends in Florida as they are dealing with the preparing for and the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. 🙏🏻

Hello, Pink & Main friends and fans!

It’s Savannah O’Gwynn, and I’m back to share a colored creation using the newest P&M products and release!!! This time I went with a different coloring medium— colored pencils!

SLTC#39, Colored Image #42 + Lessons Learned + Mistakes

SLTC#39 image #42: Lately my mind and heart have been distracted. I’ve been consumed with Hurricane Helene and Milton. **We have a house in Tampa, FL and one in SC. Both went through Helene… and I pray that Milton misses our FL house!!!

Due to little time and hardly any mental capacity, I needed a CAS card design for today’s project. I thought, “Why not try a Brownstone/kraft background with colored pencil highlights?! That’s CAS!” I also thought, “Why not try something NEW for your next project!?”

Boy was I was wrong! LOL 😂

While this card looks CAS- a background, some images colored, add twine and a plaid patterned paper panel, it actually took me twice to get it right!

LL (Lessons Learned) + Mistakes: I learned that coloring with pencils is about the same with markers. I also learned that colored pencils look great on P&M‘s Brownstone cardstock– great choice for this card!

The harder lessons came as I was coloring:

  • You need to have a LIGHT hand when coloring or you will break your pencil tip and then smear the color as you wipe away the bits and pieces 🤦🏼‍♀️ I smeared the colors so much!!! I guess I have a heavy hand when coloring!
  • Adding shading was a bit more difficult than expected- I think this is why I had a heavy hand. I tried to press harder to make the color show up more.
  • Don’t put WET accents on your card base until you are DONE- no more cutting/moving/adding/etc!!! I was almost done with my card; it looked good… but it needed ONE more thing… GLITTER! I had this thought right after I had added black enamel accents for the eyes… 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I smeared the black accents on the very top kitty as I was adding the glitter. As I was trying to clean it up (which didn’t happen, smearing and cleaning only makes black accents worse), I ended up smearing my glitter hat on the bear next to the kitty 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I had to start allllllllllllll over 😂
  • It’s best to use COLORED pencils when using this medium… NOT WATERCOLORING pencils 🤦🏼‍♀️ Again, this might be why I had a heavy hadn’t and why it was hard to get the colors to show/blend 😂 I didn’t know I had two different sets of colored pencils 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Overall thoughts: I think this card turned out great! I needed the distractions of my mistakes as we waited for the hurricane to arrive <3 I definitely think I will try to use the correct colored pencils on another project in the future!!! Plus, I really enjoy the highlighted colored pieces (only coloring certain parts of the image)… I might try coloring pencils again 🙃

I also think my coloring journey is beginning to look like a journey. I’m making mistakes and learning from them. I am using different mediums for coloring (watercoloring gems, colored pencils, etc). I’m not perfect or great at coloring but I’m still learning and having fun🖍️

❤️ I hope my holiday card and colored pencil coloring has inspired you to pull out your P&M goodies and create a something today!

I’ll be back with MORE soon— be sure to check out my IG page HERE because I PROMISE I will be sharing 4 cards that my Mom made while she was here visiting! She used lots of P&M goodies on her creations!!! She’s a natural and who I get all of my crafty genes from, for sure!! I’ve been distracted so the post hasn’t been shared yet, but I will soon!!! Wait until you see Mom’s creations!!!

Please remember to share what you create using these techniques, if you are learning to color with me, or if you use these P&M stamp/die sets so I can leave you some love ❤️
