Watercolor Bubble Birthday Card

Hi friends, this is Caitlin and today I am sharing how I finished an experimental background we made on the livestream last week. We tested out making watercolor bubbles with the Pink and Main Ink Refills as well as the Water Gems powders. The refills made a much more vibrant background and we used that one to make a fun mermaid card featuring the Stay Sparkly Stamp Set. In the moment I was not so in love with the gems background but I decided to add another bubble and use it. I am so glad that I did because I think the card turned out amazing.

To create the bubble background I started off with a piece of watercolor card stock, left dry. I sprayed an acrylic paint pallet (you could also use a large stamping block) with clean water and then added a tiny little bit of Ruby, Sunny and Citrine gem powders in a triangle shape. I mixed the powder into the water in sections with the handle tip of a paint brush and then placed a small circular dish into the water mixture to pick up color along the rim. Then I stamped the circle onto my watercolor paper, making the outer ring of the bubble.

To get the pigment to move around, I added more clean water to the middle of the circle, starting with a ring near the outer edge and then filling in the very center. I also picked up some of the colorful water from my pallet and added it to the bubble to build up even more color. When the bubbles are dry, they have a really beautiful shimmer to them. Once the background was ready to go, I stamped out the Cherry Cupcake Stamp with Asphalt Ink onto Copic X-Press It paper and let it dry for a few minutes. I colored in the cupcake with my Copic Sketch Markers in colors to match the bubbles and then used the coordinating die to cut it out.

To assemble the card, I cut out an A2 sized panel of Street Light Cardstock (5.5 in x 4.25 in) and added it to a side folding card base. I trimmed down my dried watercolor panel to 5 in x 3.75 in and glued it to the yellow layer with liquid glue. Then I popped up the cupcake with foam tape and added it to the card. I decided to add my sentiment from the Sweet Birthday Stamp Set directly to my watercolor paper with Asphalt Ink and then the last step was to add a few Eggnog Confetti sequins around the cupcake for some sparkle.

If you want to see how we made the mermaid card, you can watch the replay of the live here. Come hang out with us every Tuesday and Thursday night at 8:30 Eastern to see what else we get into.
